YC Interview Practice

A short, fast interview where clarity wins. Rehearse it against an AI partner that interrupts the way real interviewers do.

Practice with a YC-style partner

The Y Combinator interview is short and fast. Founders describe it as a rapid conversation in which partners interrupt, change topic and probe whatever sounds unclear. It does not reward a polished presentation. It rewards founders who can say what they are building in one sentence, who know their users and numbers without looking anything up, and who answer the question that was asked.

Pitch Simulator has a YC-style partner persona built for exactly that: sharp, direct, focused on founder insight, problem clarity and product-market fit, and skeptical of buzzwords. It asks one focused question at a time and challenges vague answers.

Questions founders report

What are you making?

One sentence a stranger understands. "Software that lets small restaurants order from all their suppliers in one place."

Why did you pick this idea?

Your personal connection to the problem, in two sentences.

Who are your users and how do they find you?

A specific user and a specific channel, with a number.

How many users do you have, and are they growing?

The current figure, the growth rate and the time frame.

What have you learned from users that surprised you?

One real insight. This question tests whether you talk to users.

Who are your competitors, and what don't they get?

Name them, then name the thing they miss.

Why is this the right team?

Who builds, who sells, and why you two can do this better than others.

What is the hardest thing about what you are doing?

An honest answer shows you understand the business.

Example: a rapid exchange

YC-STYLE PARTNER · HARD MODESo what do you actually do?
YOUR ANSWERWe are building an AI-powered, end-to-end platform that transforms the procurement experience for the hospitality industry.
SCORE 3/10 · COACHINGBuzzwords, no user, no action. Say who uses it and what they do with it in one sentence.
BETTERChefs at independent restaurants use it to send one weekly order to all their suppliers. 140 restaurants order through us every week.
SCORE 8/10 · COACHINGClear and concrete, with proof. Expect the follow-up: how did you get those 140?

Fictional example. In the tool each question is answered once; the "better" answer shows how a sharper answer changes the score.

How to practice for it

  1. Write one-sentence answers to the questions above, then cut each by a third.
  2. Pick the YC-style partner and run Quick (5-question) sessions on Hard Mode. The short session matches the short interview.
  3. Fix the lowest category. If clarity scores low, your one-liner is the problem; if traction scores low, your numbers are not landing.
  4. Practice with your co-founder. Decide in advance who answers technical, user and growth questions.
  5. Finish on Brutal. If you stay specific under interruptions, the real interview will feel familiar.

Frequently asked questions

How long is the YC interview?

It is widely reported to be about 10 minutes. YC's apply page says most interviews are held by video conference and that decisions are typically made the same day, with feedback for everyone who interviews. Check ycombinator.com for the current details.

What questions does YC ask in the interview?

Founders consistently report questions about what you are making, why this idea, who your users are and how they find you, growth and usage, what you learned from users, competition and why this team. Expect them fast and in no fixed order.

How should I prepare?

Know your numbers cold, practice one-sentence answers, and rehearse with both co-founders so you do not talk over each other. Then practice under time pressure with interruptions.

Is this tool affiliated with Y Combinator?

No. All Innovativ is not affiliated with Y Combinator. The YC-style persona is an AI that imitates a sharp, direct interview style focused on founder insight and product-market fit.

Can my co-founder and I practice together?

Pitch Simulator takes typed answers from one account, so co-founders can sit together and agree who answers which theme. That is good practice for the real interview too.
